Adrian Austin

Adrian Austin is a Kiwi living in the land of Oz. He was born and raised in New Zealand by musical parents. Through the 1960s and 1970s, Adrian was heavily influenced by his father, a jazz guitarist. In 1978, Adrian left home with a guitar given to him by his dad; by 1980 he had his first gig at an all-night café.

Since those early days of his musical adventures, Adrian has sung for his supper throughout New Zealand with his guitar just like a true Hobbit on a quest.

As a singer-songwriter/social commentator, this particular Kiwi has avoided mainstream pop culture. Instead, many of his songs and ideas have been inspired by the Counterculture movement and movies such as “Easy Rider” (yes, Adrian still rides a motorbike!), “Rebel Without A Cause” and “Woodstock” (without the drugs).

English is Adrian Austin’s first language; music is his second.

Having lived in Australia since the early 1990s, Adrian sees himself as “a little less young” than he was, but, ever jovial, he has continued to write songs and performs regularly in cafes, wineries and pubs. He has even scored the occasional corporate gig.

He has travelled a good deal with the guitar his dad gave him, making regular visits back to New Zealand. He went to Colorado in 2006 and to Hawaii in 2009.

Adrian thoroughly enjoys writing songs and playing in front of people as well as recording. He declares that one day he plans to set up a travelling Flea Circus franchise and support artists such as Barry Manilow and Placido Domingo (Kiwi humour?).

Adrian plays guitar, harmonica and didgeridoo. His vocals are delivered with a “peaceful easy feeling”.

He lists, as his influences, Neil Young, Van Morrison, JJ Cale and Neil Finn, but not Nana Mouskouri.
